Overview of Italian Citizenship Through Naturalization
The process known as “citizenship by naturalization,” requires applicants to live in Italy for a specified period before they can apply for citizenship. Generally, non-EU citizens must reside in Italy for ten continuous years, while EU citizens can apply after four years of residency. However, those with Italian ancestry or who are married to an Italian citizen may be eligible to apply after shorter periods.
Throughout this residency period, applicants must demonstrate their integration into Italian society, including stable income, accommodation, and a basic understanding of the Italian language and culture. Italy values its rich cultural heritage and history, and becoming a citizen means committing to upholding these values.
The naturalization process involves several steps, including obtaining a residency permit, maintaining legal residency, and submitting an application with various supporting documents. While we aim to provide information on all routes to Italian citizenship, ICAP specializes in citizenship by descent and marriage and does not directly handle cases for Italian citizenship through residency.
